Brandt Back on Winning Trail

After his longest slump of the season (one race) Dave Brandt resumed his winning ways at the 2006 Governor’s Cup in Ellensburg, Washington, June 18. David and his '95 PICO American Dream were second to only one boat in points going into the final. He took the lead at the start and was never really challenged for his 5th win in 6 races this season.
The one boat ahead of Dave going into the final was his Dad, Bill, with the '72 Notre Dame. Not knowing the concept of Father’s Day, Dave left Bill to follow along behind him and pick up their first father/son 1-2 of the season. Third place went to Marc Connelly having an exceptional day with his '69 Notre Dame.
All three had to weave their way through a course strewn with parts from dead and damaged boats as one after another each of the remaining competitors either fizzled out or crashed.
David Newton drove Dave Brandt’s second boat, The '78 Squire Shop, the furthest ending up in fourth overall. Fifth was Mike Cathey with his '00 York International and sixth went to Jeff Snell with the '88 Heartbreakers Gentlemen’s Club and for the second race in a row, Steve Schmitz '85 Squire Shop let him down in the final.
Dave Brandt also won the first consolation, with his '78 Squire Shop and then gave David Newton the chance to drive it in the final. Second in the consolation was Kirk Maupin with his '77 Squire Shop and following him was Jim Putich with his new '03 LLumar Window Film. Fourth went to Jeff Heimkes and his '82 Executone and fifth was Lee Robertson with his '93 Miss Budweiser. Ron Hartley moved up from the second connie and was sixth with the '82 Oh Boy! Oberto.
Roger Newton won the second connie with his Electric Powered '59 Maverick, but had no more batteries and so was unable to advance. Ron Hartley then moved up on the basis of his second place finish. Third was Marty Shallenburger with his '75 Oh Boy! Oberto. David Newton failed to finish with Jerry Courtway’s '79 Miss Budweiser as did Geofrey and Gary Grembowski with their '01 Miss Emcor and '82 Budweiser Light boats.
