Having a Grandfather that was a consummate craftsman, and a father entrenched in manufacturing, David's innate mechanical abilities were exposed at a young age. Couple that with exposure during his "formative years" (as early as 9 years-old), to Northwest R/C Legends such as: Edward D. Fisher, Ron Erickson, Frank Ward, Roger J. Newton, Les Ruggles, Jack Haugen and Bill Hornell, among others; What else could come from this kid at 14 years old, but an aggressive competitive spirit, his first Gold Cup and an intense desire for more? Two drivers Championships were his before the age of 20, and not long after, numerous club milestones, that today still stand in the record-books, of a 30+ year-old organization. Not the least of which is an unprecedented 12 Gold Cup wins in RCU's most sought after and prestigious annual race.
Even with his intense competitive spirit and understanding of the sport, another passion he values nearly as much is the one his father holds most dearly, that of the association with like minded individuals, having fun racing model boats!
