Bio:

This current Miss Lapeer is either the "oldest new boat" or "newest oldtimer" in R/CU. Originally built in 1974 as Jess Gray's '59 Miss Spokane, she won the 1977 Stan Sayres Memorial at the Kent Lagoons, defeating Keith Shew's Coral Reef and Les Ruggles Miss US ll. After years of on-and off activity, the boat made it's way into the hands of Mike Walcker in 1996 and campaigned for him until a disasterous crash into the rocks at Chelan in 1998. Walcker elected not to re-build the boat and purchased a fiberglass replacement for the Miss Spokane, leaving the wrecked boat to adorn his boat shop as a "decoration". In early 1999, Jim Latimer spotted the battered boat bolted to the back of Walcker's boat shop door and inquired if the boat was available. Walcker indicated that it was and if Latimer wanted it he could have it, stating, "that boat will never see the water again". In spring of 2001, after a complete rebuild, Jess Gray's venerable old Miss Spokane returned to R/CU as the '65 Miss Lapeer. After struggling with new/old "boatitus" at Wenatchee and Ellensburg, she came alive to make second connies at Moses Lake, Spokane and Marysville and finished the season with 3,193 points, good enough for 39th place out of 75 competitors. At the conclusion of the 2001 season, new R/CU member Paul Hadley purchased all of Latimer's Lapeer equipment and looked forward to his first year in R/CU with a very well travelled and historic R/C Unlimited! Officially retired June, 2008. |
