About the real boat: For 1973 the Pay'n Pak team returned with a vengeance. Mickey Remund was hired to chauffeur a new Ron Jones hull which had been built in the off season. Originally designed as a cabover, Heerensperger insisted on a conventional style hull. Jones relinquished, but held fast on his desire to include a revolutionary "horizontal stabilizer" on the boat.
Constructed using newfound techniques with honeycomb aluminium, which gave more strength for less weight, the new "Winged Wonder" made an immediate impact. Stunningly beautiful in it's own right, Remund and the Pak won races at Miami, Madison, Seattle, and Toledo en route to the 1973 National Championship. Remund had been leading the Gold Cup at Tri-Cities, until losing a prop on the last lap. The following weekend, on a dreary, rainy day, the Pak and Dean Chenoweth in the Miss Budweiser became the first boats to turn in a heat average above 120 mph. Over the course of the season, the new Pay'n Pak had rewritten every record in the book. (From: Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum)
