7/21/2002 - Brandt Wins 1/8th scale NAMBA National Championship!
- RCU season point leader Dave Brandt drove his PICO American Dream to victory in the 2002 NAMBA national regatta July 20 in Eugene, Oregon.
- Leading a contingent of RCU members, David beat 53 challengers to win the top prize. He led the final heat from wire to wire and was cheered on by all the other RCU members.
- David’s father, Bill, almost joined him in the final heat as he tried to repeat his performance of the prior weekend in RCU’s Governor’s Cup by winning both the second consolation and then the first consolation to move into the final field. Bill led the second consolation from wire to wire to complete part one of the plan and was leading the first consolation when another boat cut the course and drove right through Bill’s Miss Exide.
- The second consolation was pretty much an all RCU affair as in addition to Bill, Gary Jensen had his Hallmark Homes, Lee Robertson had the U-65 Squire, Jesse Robertson had Harry Gatjens’ Miss Budweiser all in the heat. As mentioned Bill led from wire to wire but was closely pursued by Jesse. Lee and Gary were right behind until an accident on the backstretch took both of them out. David Newton’s Miss Budweiser was first alternate for the heat.
- Also representing RCU at the event were Dave Reiser with the Thor Racing, Geoff Amos with his new Winston Eagle, John Howell with the Sunny Jim Jam and Mick Shutt with the Natural Light.

- 5/14/2002 - Big Boat news.
- The Budweiser team was out on a choppy Lake Washington testing today. Fox news (Local Channel 13) was on hand to record the event. Terry Troxell, (Driver of the Zenetix II), was out observing the boats, and noted that these were ideal conditions to be testing in. It was really close to actual race conditions.
The Budweiser team brought the T-5 and the T-6 out to Stan Sayers pits for tests. The first boat to hit the water was the T-6. Dave Villwock drove the boat around the course for 3-4 laps and brought it in. He then took the T-5 out on the course. The T-5 had the saltwater scoop on the air intake. On Dave's 2nd lap, he had to slow down on the front stretch due to a pleasure boat that had just run into the infield and stopped after Dave's first pass. It looked like Dave wanted to avoid any perpendicular rollers that may have been created by that pleasure boat. Other than that, the first couple tests went smoothly. Both boats ran very steadily around the course. Among other things noted, the Budweiser team was spotted testing different rudders on the boats.

- 3/25/2002 - Bedside chat with Don Mock.
- The 2002 was a season that I knew would be very challenging and competitive in R/CU. A third consecutive shot at the High Point Title seemed very tough as many new and improved boats were ready to take me down. I had hoped that my involvement with the '82 Atlas Van Lines project would not interfere but I never imagined that a slow-motion collision with a snow boarder would take me out for part of the season. Last Monday several of us from the museum, including Jim Harvey, went skiing at Crystal Mountain. I've skied most of my life without any injuries until about 11 am when I got tangled up with a boarder and broke my leg. This wasn't one of those "fractures" you hear about. It was a total twist and explosion of my lower right leg. My ski boot was facing 90 degrees in the wrong direction of my leg. The break required about three hours of surgery which included the addition of many pins, screws and plates. I got enough metal in my leg to trigger every metal detector in the country. Pretty painful three days in Swedish Hospital but great drugs, and am now home doing fine. I've learned a lot from Harry Gatjens over the years on how to get along on one leg. I got the crutches down and have a wheel chair for long trips. The doctor says it was a very complex reconstruction but I should be OK if I stay off it for a few months. So how will this effect my racing? Probably have to miss the first few races but with your help I think I can begin my season at Marysville or so. Just getting up on the drivers stand is my main obstacle. I'll also need some guys to help with setting up courses for a while. Don't want to fall in the lake and have this heavy cast take me to the bottom.
Well, that's my story. I'm just hanging around the house on the couch if you want to give me a call or drop by. Thanks, -Don Mock
