11/5/2007 - Oberto Sponsorship!
Chet Lepinski announced at the Awards Banquet that the
Oberto Sausage Co. will be the 2008 title sponsor for R/CU. This will make the 6th year that the
Oberto Sausage Company has been a sponsor for R/C Unlimiteds 1/8th scale hydroplane racing. As before it will be called the Oh Boy! Oberto Championship Series. Larry Oberto was expected to be at the banquet but was unable to attend.
11/4/2007 - Awards Banquet
The 2007 Oh Boy! Oberto Championship Series awards banquet was quite a success. See the results from the link on the Driver Standings page, or go

10/22/2007 - The closest election in R/CU history?
I have no fingernails left. They were all bitten right down to the quick as I watched and counted R/CU Contest Board election results. Several lead changes took place and just today some tight races were decided by last minute ballot submissions. A drag race to the finish line, I can handle. But this election stuff is just more than my poor nerves can take! So here you have it, ladies and gentlemen, the newly elected 2008 R/CU Contest Board. Joining incumbents Harry M. Gatgens, Scott Meyers, and Lee Robertson, please welcome:
Dave Brandt
David Newton
Chester Lepinski
and...
Jerry Courtway
Congratulations to all incoming Board members. This is an excellent group and I look forward to supporting you during the upcoming racing seasons. A special thank you to all who voted- every vote counted this time!

Just a friendly reminder- on October 22nd, at 5PM, the official balloting for the 2008 R/CU Contest Board will close. If you have not voted yet, this would be a good time to cast your
ballot. For all of those who have cast their ballots, thanks again for your participation.

10/15/2007 - Last Call For The R/CU Awards Banquet!
The 2007 R/CU Annual Awards Banquet is right around the corner. Have you sent Chet your check yet? I admit that mine is tardy, but I am licking the envelope right now! November 3rd is coming up faster than turn one in a final, so please take a moment to make your reservation by sending in your check. Join us from 6:00PM to 11:00PM for an evening of reliving the R/CU racing season (not mine!) great banquet speakers, dinner and the traditional silent auction. This year's banquet will be held at the Muckleshoot Casino in Auburn, WA. This year's guest speakers will be Kayleigh Perkins from the Unlimited Lights ranks, and brother Brian Perkins of both the Unlimited and Unlimited Lights ranks. Please plan to join us for one more lap of R/CU fun!

10/10/2007 - Northwest Scale Hydroplane Championship
Looks like the Seattle skies are clearing for this weekend's Northwest Scale Hydroplane Championship Race. On Saturday we will start testing at 9:30, earlier if possible, with heat 1A at 11:00. We will be registering the racers just prior to the first heat so don't think that it's too late. We will be forgiving as to the appearance of the boats as we know that this is the end of a long season, although they do need to meet all safety requirements. If you need fuel or plugs let me and I will find what you need. I'm personally excited to see the new "Mini Thunder" class that will run on Sunday. We welcome all scale racers to come race with us so replace those tired bearings, charge those batteries, check out the fuel system and as Art Oberto would say "Let's Go Racing"

10/8/2007 - U-17 Red Dot sighting

The U-17 Red Dot hydroplane made an appearance in the Salmon Days Parade in Issaquah, WA earlier this week. The Red Dot hydroplane with its colorful paint scheme is a fan favorite. Building the hydroplane in just 6 months was an impressive feat for "our gang racing". With Nate Brown at the helm, the Red Dot made its very first qualifying attempt at a speed of 142mph, just moments after the hull touched water for the very first time. It will be interesting to see what the Red Dot can do next season!

10/2/2007 - Statistics Update
The Stats have been updated on the Statistics page.
10/1/2007 - Gold Cup Results!
The Gold Cup results are up and the 2007 Oh Boy! Oberto Season Championship is over. Congratulations to Ryan Partee for winning Rookie of the Year and Bill Brandt for Season High Points!
9/25/2007 - Please Don't Forget to Vote For Your 2008 R/CU Contest Board!
The Gold Cup is over and we are all back home, safe and sound, and back into our daily routines. Maybe tonight after work you will decommission your boat for the winter, like me. If you name is Gene, Jack, Mick, or Dave, maybe you will be surveying her for for some needed wintertime repairs. But before you get too distracted by reality, won't you take a moment to cast your vote for the 2008 R/CU Contest Board? If you have already, many thanks. (There are 24 ballots in and counted so far- up 25% from the participation rate of last year!) It is especially important to vote this year because there are seven excellent candidates vying for just four open positions. Your individual vote is going to be exceedingly important in these close races. Balloting closes on October 22nd and all voters must hold an active R/CU boat registration to cast a 2008 ballot.
The R/CU Contest Board sets the agenda for our racing season. It considers rules and race format changes, safety concerns, and sponsor relations. The Board controls the R/CU budgets, manages the club statistics, organizes the banquet, aproves equipment purchases and directs race site development efforts. It also manages and assigns R/CU registrations and fees, addresses scale accuracy issues, and enforces the R/CU decibel rule. Take it from me, the Contest Board is also a fun place to serve R/CU.
If you hold an active R/CU registration, I urge you to take the time to vote. You can download your ballot right here and, after taking just a few thoughtful seconds to fill it out, forward your completed ballot to me by October 22nd.
I appreciate your participation. It is one of the reasons why racing in R/CU is so great.

9/25/2007 - 2007 Northwest Scale Hydroplane Championship
Just a reminder that the 2007 Northwest Scale Hydroplane Championship is taking place October 13th and 14th at Twin Lakes park in Arlington Washington.
As we have done in the past, if you do not have NAMBA insurance we will cover the first $10.00 of insurance cost. If you have already used your one time single event coverage this year we will pay $10.00 towards the balance of a full NAMBA membership as single event insurance can be used only one time per year.
This year we have expanded the program to include a "Mini Thunder" race on Sunday. This class is comprised of "almost ready to run Miss Vegas boats" that can be purchased at your local hobby store; all you have to do is add fuel and run. This class has limited openings.
Remember that we are racing for "All the Marbles" and this year we have some of the top 1/8 Scale Hydro racers from APBA, NAMBA and IMPBA participating in this race.

8/25/2007 - Northwest Scale Hydroplane Championship
Don't miss the opportunity to race against some of the top 1/8-scale racers in the Pacific Northwest. The fourth annual NW Scale Hydroplane Championship Race is scheduled for October 13th and 14th just outside Seattle, WA. This 2-day race has been a huge success in the past and this year's race is shaping up to be the largest turnout yet. Also as a special event this year we will be hosting a special demonstration race sponsored by Jerry Dunlap on Sunday.
With some very enthusiastic racers coming from as far as Miami and San Diego, we should have some incredible racing. On Saturday we will start testing at 9:30A.M., or earlier if possible, with Heat 1A at 11:30A.M. We will be registering the racers just prior to the first heat so don't think that it's too late. We will also be very forgiving as to the appearance of the boats as we know that this is the end of a long season, although they do need to meet all safety requirements.
The Saturday night get-together will be at Alfy's Pizza in Smokey Point starting at around 5P.M. We have a room reserved where we can eat, drink, tell lies and swap parts. All are welcome!!!!!!!
Please remember that the hotel fills up fast for this event so please call today and get your reservations

8/12/2007 - Silver Cup Results
The Silver Cup results are in! See the Race Schedule and Driver Standings for the full results!
8/10/2007 - New Piston Power Hydroplane To Join The Circuit
Ray Forsman and Mike Hogan have a joint effort to bring another piston powered hydroplane to the ABRA Racing circuit. They just missed the Seattle Seafair race, but hope to be ready for San Diego's Thunderboat Regatta on Mission Bay. Using a hull, previously known as the Miss Free-I, purchased from Dr. Ken Muscatel and powered by a piston engine acquired from airplane engine restorer Joe Yancey of California. Ray and Mike have secured Clearwater Casino as their title sponsor and will have Dick Lynch pilot the craft.
You can read the full story in the
Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader.
8/7/2007 - Oberto, Not always about Racing
When in the pit area of Seattle Seafair on Friday, it was noted that there were a lot of kids around the Oh Boy! Oberto hydroplane. Stopping by to see just what was going on illuminated the situation.
The group turned out to be 65 kids from the Federal Way Boys and Girls Club, ranging from age 5 to 16. These lucky individuals were part of a six week "Race Against Drugs" class that included the highlight opportunity of being able to get an up close tour of the 2007 Oh Boy! Oberto!
Each of these kids received an Oberto cap and hydroplane t-shirt along with a bag of other goodies including stickers and Oberto Beef Jerky!
The Oberto tour and gifts were great, but the best part was seeing the kids getting autographs from Steve David, Larry Oberto and Bill Wurster. It looked as though they were having even more fun doing this than the kids, if it were possible. Even more impressive was the fact that these guys also took time out to talk to these kids individually, and not just go through the motions to give them an autograph and send them on their way.
We would like to extend many thanks to Richard Thompson, Larry Oberto and David Heinz of Oberto for doing this for the kids. After speaking with one of the Directors of Race Against Drugs regarding this event, it was clear that the kids had a great time. Thank you
Oberto Sausage Company for all that you do for the kids and the sport of hydroplane racing! You are a true class act!

7/25/2007 - New Rowboat Paint Scheme

Our thanks to Brian Lepinski for repairs and repaint of the clubs rowboat. Brian repainted our rowboat in the spirit of the new

7/24/2007 - Just in time for Tri-Cities
Just off the Press
"I wanted to send you a note letting you know that Steve Schmitz left my Boat Shop last night around 9 P.M., he has a new Squire Shop nicely painted by Bob Hulliger. Watch out Brandt's, there is going to be a new Sheriff in Town!"

7/23/2007 - Chets other Hobbies
Chet was on vacation on the Oregon coast and wanted to share this story with you all.

"While on the Oregon coast in the first week of July 2007, Chet decided he would like to do something other then boat racing. Why not do some art work? As we all know Chets boat looks bad, and he wants to do art work? First stop in Lincoln City for him was the Jennife

r L Sears Glass Art Studio (what a better place for him to blow hot air). In about 45 min Chet had blown his first ever glass float and to his surprise it did not look that bad. So what was next for him to do? Why not do some glass fusing. This is where you take pieces of colored glass and make some kind of picture on a 6in X 6in square of glass. Chet thought that was just for him, but why not a picture of his hydroplane (not said his wife). Well after about two hours of class he did come up with something (his hydro what else). Chet is looking forward to going back next year to do more art work or maybe he should just work on his hydroplane. If you want information on where to go to do this go here: http://www.oregoncoast.org/foundry/index.html"

7/19/2007 - Party at the Brandts!
The Brandts will once again be hosting a party Saturday July 28, 2007, after the RCU race starting at 6:30 PM. This annual occasion has become somewhat of a tradition after our day of racing with RCU. All friends and family are invited. This is an invitation also to all our out of state friends that come to race with us, so Al, Troy, Mike and others please plan on coming and bring your friends. Chet please pass this along to the big boat teams too, especially the Oberto's. It's always fun to have them.
We do ask that you bring a lawn chair, if it's easy for you to do so. I expect it to be warm, so swim suits are also in order.
I hear that Brenda may surprise us with a little of her "South of the Border" cooking.
I will try and print some directions to our house for distribution on race day.
We look forward to seeing you all there,
Jackie, Bill, Brenda and Dave
7/18/2007 - Brian's Hydro-Wear

Re: SEAFAIR Hydro Mania Fan Fest!
SEAFAIR is proud to inform you of an event developed to generate interest and awareness of the spectacular sport of Hydroplane Racing. The Hydro Mania Fan Fest will be held at the
Seattle Center on Tuesday July 31, 2007 from 3:00 pm 8:00 pm. This is an opportunity to showcase your equipment, provide your sponsors with additional exposure and give the public the opportunity to learn more about the sport. This is a great opportunity to generate interest in your racing team and sponsors while also promoting the upcoming Chevrolet Cup to be held on August 5th.
KMPS radio will be conducting interviews and broadcasting live from the event. Listeners will also be able to call into the event and ask questions about Hydroplane racing and your specific racing team. The hope is that Drivers, Crew Chiefs and Owners will be available to answer their questions.
SEAFAIR is requesting you bring your boat, driver and crew to this event in their race team uniforms. The event is being held directly across the street from

6/26/2007 - Will the 'Real' Prather Products Owner Please Stand up?
At first blush it appeared that K&B had acquired the Prather prop molds since when asked by Fred Stock they stated that their props were the same design, pitch and diameter as the discontinued Prather props. Since then, new information has been learned. We were recently informed that
Hyperformance Products has purchased the assets of Prather Products, Inc.
David says "Beware of the Fakes!"
David Rippe, President of Hyperformance Products, Inc. states that "others have 'copied' Prather props", but that Hyperformance Products actually own the Prather Molds for Prather products including Props, Boats as well as other Prather products. "Fuel tubing will be available within two weeks - by the spool and in 3-foot packages." Hyperformance Products website states "We will continue to sell products under the Prather name. It has been a 35 year history that we do not want to relinquish!!"
If you need further information, get it from the source -

6/24/2007 - Need Prather Props?
Since Prather had gone out of business many have been concerned about where to get their favorite Prather prop, or even if any were available anymore. As it turns out, K&B has these props and they are now available on their
website. Fred Stock has done some legwork to insure that the new K&B props are the same pitch and diameter as the previous Prather props. Thanks Fred! K&B/Prather propellers can be ordered
here.
6/21/2007 - New Boat Bio
The 2001 Miss Emcor Boat Bio has been added to the 'Our Boats' section of the site.
6/20/2007 - Do you believe in Miracles
 |
|
Do you believe in miracles? I do now. Thanks to Scott and his friend John I have the Kai back in my boat shop. When the boat went down I figured I knew right where it was. It took about an hour or more for Scott to get suited up and out to where we thought the boat was. He started down where I thought he did not go far enough. It looked over 30-40 feet north of where I thought he should be. Prior to submerging Scott told us that after 10 minutes let him know and he would surface for his bearings. So he went down and made a couple of circles and actually brushed the boat. It was too muddy to actually see anything down there even though it was only about 6-8 feet deep. When he surfaced he had only been down about 3 minutes. WOW! What a relief. I cant thank Scott enough. Now I have to put some more foam in before do any more racing.

6/19/2007 - Pink Lady Found!
Scott Meyers went to Granger today to look for Roger's boat that sank on Sunday. He rented diver gear in Yakima. Scott said that it took about 5 minutes to find the Pink Lady on the bottom. "It was a lucky find, as the bottom is very bad" Scott commented. The radio box was dry of any water and the boat fired up right away. Scott said that is the last time he will dive in that pond, so make sure your boat will float the next time you race there. Thanks to Scott the Pink Lady will race again!
We owe you one Scott.

As many of you know Brian works as a mechanic and salesman for Richland Bicycles and Fitness Equipment. This past winter he purchases a Trek road bike and with all the changes he has made on it the cost is now about $3000.00. He just wanted to do something other then boat racing all the time. Riding to work saves on gas and gives him the road work he needs.
In May he did an 50 mile ride in the Inland Empire Century Bike Ride in the Tri-Cities. On June 9th he did the Apple Century Bike Ride in Wenatchee WA. For him it was a 50 mile ride, 700 foot elevation climb taking three hours and fifteen minutes for an average of 15.3 MPH. That was under the goal he had set for himself. You can get more information on this bike ride at http://www.applebikeride.com/
In three R/CU races this year Brian has not finished one heat. In bike riding he has finished two for two. Yes we will see him at more boat races.

Since then, procrastination has kept the poor Circus in dry dock. But now there is hope for the beleaguered craft!
Brian has found the time to make repairs! In Brian's words "After a year of staring at it the sponsons are on the Circus. Now all I need is find some one with time to paint"

5/20/2007 - To all of our RCU Family
On June 14th, I will end my 32 1/2 year run with the WSP and retire. On June 16th, we invite all who can attend ( I know, its a race weekend) to be our guests at a cook-out at our place in cashmere. We will be serving bar-b-que, salad, cold beer and desert from 10 am to 6 pm with a short formal departmental send off at 1pm. We would love to see anyone who is confident enough to avoid a practice day before a race to help us say thanks to all those who have been our friends for so many years.
On that note, I must acknowledge those who came to our rescue over apple blossom weekend. A special thanks to Steve Doolittle, Craig Bonar, and Chet, who always seems to step up to the plate when asked. And to anyone else , or more correctly, everyone else, who helped out in our absence. On Tuesday before the race, I learned that one of my closest friends had taken his own life in Hayward, California. He had left instructions for his parents to take several items back to joanne and I, and not wanting them to travel to us from where they lived, in Corvallis, Oregon, we went down there and spent the weekend with them trying to understand the unthinkable. This entire year has been one of very rewarding highs to unspeakable lows. Many, many changes, for sure.
I have been offered a position as a senior agent with BNSF railway in spokane. This is a position I have hoped would come open and jumped at the chance to apply. The process started in february, and after 45 candidates, It looks as though I will get the job. It is a tremendous opportunity for joanne and I to secure our future but it does appear that it will take away many race dates. We will be relocating to the spokane area and our daughter and family will be moving into our place for at least the next few years. We will miss all of you and hope that at every opportunity, we can stop by at races and that you will keep in touch with us.
Your friends always;
Mike and Joanne Walcker

5/14/2007 - R/CU Members Out of Commission
Thought it was time we reported on the several members who are missing racing due to injuries or medical issues. John Gatjens is recovering from heart bypass surgery at Providence/Swedish Hospital in Seattle. Harry said that John did not feel well at the race at Rock Island and with Harry's, and others insistence, John went to the doctor during the week to learn he had some clogged plumbing and underwent a 5 hour procedure Friday morning. They have already had John up and walking and he may be released from the hospital mid-week. As you can imagine, launching boats and carrying gear is off-limits for John for a month or two so Harry, and several other members who rely on John's impeccable launching and coaching skills will be looking for some help at upcoming races.
Then there's Steve Schmitz who took a weird tumble from the top of his garage stairs in March and busted up some bones in his wrists. I have not talked to Steve for a while but assume he is recovering and hopes to be back racing soon.
And finally, the Czar himself cracked a bone in his leg which had to get hooked back together by surgeons. I hear Rog has been attending races, but as I well know, it's not fun hobbling around on crutches.
So, let's wish these guys well and give them a hand when they return to the racing circuit.
-Don Mock

4/2/2007 - The first 2007 R/CU race is in the books!
With some wild racing and cobweb shaking the inaugural 2007 RCU Columbia Cup race started off the season with a bang! Unfortunately for some that "bang" means repairs that need to be made before the Bill Muncey Memorial in three weeks. Fun was had by the racers as they once again hit the waters of the Columbia River to show their stuff or to have their stuff show them a thing or two.
Catch all the racing result details on the Race Schedule and Driver Standings pages!
3/29/2007 - The 2007 R/CU Season Kicks Off This Weekend!
The Lepinskis are finally back from their private chartered yacht tour of the Bahamas- so it must be time to go racing again! This weekend, the R/CU faithful will gather on the banks of the racing pond at Two Rivers Park, in Finley, Washington to find out who made the best decisions with regards to their over-winter program improvements. New boats will take to the water for the first time, powered by wild hopes and far flung expectations. Old boats sporting new owners are likely to show up too, teaching lessons to new drivers. New drivers will arrive, putting the fear of God into the old timers. (Go, Brenda, GO!). And, of course, the old, proven warhorses will be there, ready to dash newcomer hopes by running just as good as they did back in Chelan.
Welcome to R/CU, 2007! The weather report looks promising and we all know that the Two Rivers site is just about as good as it gets for racing. It is time to start slowly amalgamating your racing stuff, time to prepare to load up the car with hydroplane paraphanalia. (My car is already packed up, ready to go. I even have Oberto Beef jerky at the ready, in my car...) It is finally time to come and kick some hips at the Columbia Cup. I can’t wait to see you there!

3/22/2007 - Newly qualified RCU member
For the "As if Three Weren't Enough Already" file...
I'm proud (scared?) to announce the first newly qualified driver on the RCUnlimiteds circuit this season; Brenda Brandt!
Yes that's right. Now we have to race three of 'em. During a recent test day at Finley, Brenda Brandt nervously shook and stuttered but ever so skillfully maneuvered the Squire Shop around the pond for her five qualification laps. During the laps a few very considerate ducks volunteered to enter the course and provide some dandy lane-change practice which she handled very nicely.
Seriously though, as I know we'll all agree, Brenda will be a really terrific addition to our driver lineup and will no doubt be a top contender for rookie of the year this season. Welcome aboard Brenda!
-Scott Meyers
3/21/2007 - RCU Testing day report
in Ellensburg:

We had a nice day in Ellensburg, with David Newton testing his freshly painted 7/11. It needed some new engine parts, I am told, and so did not show great speed. Brian Anderson, the Grembowskis, Ryan and June and Lee Robertson were all there, with Lee just doing his usual pits crawl. Gary Jensen ironed out his new Hallmark Homes in about three tries. It took three times that many launch and dies until I found the hairball on my needle valve. Then I got the Carbon Knife going acceptably well until the breeze picked up the nose in the late afternoon sun. Lee offered a couple of great pointers as far as set up is concerned and those are getting cranked into the program now.
Randy Gosseen eschewed the Kennewickian testing day to join us. he is cogitatin' how to get that Bardahl up and free of the water. Nobody really did any racing, so to speak. It was test, test, test- and then check out Chris Denslow's amazing new book.
Mostly, I saw folks like myself chasing off winter gremlins. it is a great time to find any little stray issues to mop up. As with the others who came to the Official R/CU Testing Day, I think that I am ready to go racing now. I just shot the clear coat over the latest sponson mods yesterday, and rubbed it all out this morning. The chore list is getting pretty short. It's about time to line these things up and see what happens!
-Marc Connelly
Meanwhile, at Finley:
We finished with Sharefest at about 2:00 pm. I called Dave B and Jeff H and we all ran down to Finley to test our boats for a couple hours. I can proudly say that I was the first to throw the new Executone! Not a difficult task as it feels to weigh about ten pounds. It ran reasonably well but stripped the flex-shaft collet the first time he put real power to it. I just happened to have an exact length replacement shaft ready to go in my box (no idea why I have it... it doesn't fit anything I run!), so I threw that to him and he got 'er back on the water. Unfortunately by that point I had to dash off to a dinner engagement (yup, full day) and missed the next runs of the boat. Jeff called later that evening and said it worked very well. The Exide, I'm pleased to say, appears to be unbearably fast. From the moment it hit the water it jumped and lurched and snorted and bucked and clearly hadn't missed a beat since last season. Some minor sponson modifications seem to have settled it down just a bit and, believe it or not, it never went over and always came back to shore. Albeit without the cowling once. David and Bill ran some boats too ('95 Pico, Squire, Madison) with the Squire looking like the Queen of the pits until Dave got the '95 Pico tuned in decently. He and I only got on the water together once but it was before he got the tune so I had more speed at that point. As Bill was testing the Madison I tossed-in and proceeded to drive around him on the outside. He didn't seem terribly pleased, and as a result I needled him for the rest of the day. "Gee Bill, you're gonna need to find some speed...."
All-in-all it was a pretty good day. The only way it could have been better was if I could've come up to Eburg for some hob-knobbin' with my buds.
-Scott Meyers
3/21/2007 - Contact for RCSportscraft
As many of you already know, Jeff Heimkes has been graciously fullfilling orders for those who had previously had orders in with Troy. Jeff would like everyone to know that his email address to contact him regarding RCSportscraft orders is now rcsportscraftjeff {at} hotmail.com
3/15/2007 - Boat added to For Sale page
We have the classic 1971 Pride of Pay N Pak added to our For Sale page. If you are looking to get into the sport at a reasonable price with a classic hull, this would be a great way to do it!
3/2/2007 - Testing Day
R/CU Testing Day is set for Saturday, March 17th in Ellensburg. Today, when I went out to the shop to putter with boats, I discovered that my dear, sweet cat- Madge- had urped-up all over the bow decks of my Notre Dame- remorselessly. Is this an omen for the upcoming season? Perhaps a christening of some kind? Certainly purging was involved, so maybe it was a good thing? While I ponder this (and bother to share it with you) I am reminded that it is time to re-commission the racing program, get my final tweaks done, and prepare for Testing Day, 2007. I am also reminded that cats, by their very nature, don't give a fig for what their loving owners might cherish most.
The very idea of Testing Day steps my heart rate up by about ten beats per minute. Seeing the old gang, the smell of burned nitro hanging in the air, that cold, dense air packing into our freshly polished head buttons- I can hardly wait, myself. Testiing Day is when the nitro heavies begin their dance once again.
It is also a mixed bag. I have been to Testing Day when we ran in the snow- and we had a ball! And, facing facts, we all know that when the Ellensburg spring comes, the Ellensburg wind awakens. And there ain't no wind like the Ellensburg wind, ladies and gentlemen. (Ask Jeff if you don't believe me.) Fortunately for us, March 17th usually finds the Ellensburg wind still in hibernation, unawares that someone has come to town seeking fun that can be easily ruined by 35 mile per hour rippers. Clearly, going to Testing Day is its own reward, a leap of faith, a gamble of sorts- but one that is well worth it.
So dig out the left over dregs of last years fuel stash, fetch up a fresh plug or two, and come see what turns up. I will be there because it sure beats the puddin' out of mowing my lawn for the first time this year. That, my friends, can always wait until next weekend.
And, by the way, don't forget to wear a little green- my people insist upon it. See you there: 11 AM until 4PM!

2/23/2007 - In Need of Swiss made WIB Bearings?
I have a source for the Swiss made WIB bearings. I know that Ron Byrd who is the guy who had RaceCraft bearings is out of business and people are hurting for the good bearings. I am selling sets of bearings that will fit the CMDI (MAC) 67/84, the CMB 67 Grand Prix and CMB 67/80 CAM. The cost is $40 per set plus shipping. It will take 8-10 weeks to get the first batch and there should be a steady supply after that. I'm not taking any money now. I am just compiling a list of people who want them on a first come -first serve basis. From the responce I got from the first day I already had to call the distributor and double my original order.

2/12/2007 - R/C Hydro Show was a Success!
T

here is just something right and good about a bunch of R/C hydro racers gathering at the world famous Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum for a public show and tell. especially in February, when racing is out of the question. At the third annual R/C Hydro Show, I jawboned until my jawbone ached. I hawked ten pizzas and met a bunch of interesting folks who stopped by to glare at my raceweary, but game old warhorse. I sensed that racers were hard at work in their boat shops, making program changes, digging for speed secrets, and generally bench racing for all it's worth. It was a great day- not, maybe as great as a bona fide raceday- but darned close.

I few thanks are in order. First, Nelson Holmberg and his eR/CU crew, with Rogers gentle guidance, did a great job of getting the word out. The crowd was not huge, but I talked to several families who came though that saw our announcements in the media. After three years of pounding away, maybe we are finally getting onto those community calendars. Dane Sorensen and David Williams always do a great job of turning over a first rate show site at the Museum and Sunday was no exception. Thanks to everyone who made this third annual R/C Hydro Show a terrific success.
I saw an interesting bit of trafficking in Hydroplane materials at the show. Somebody purchased Kerrry Kjos' beautiful Miss Thriftway, walking right out the door with the entire program under his arm.
Will we see the persimmon and white comet racing this year? Man, I hope so!

1/15/2007 - A Shout Out of Good Works
I suppose it is a bit hard to know where to draw the line between allowing a good deed to just pass in its own quiet grace and pointing it out for the good and glory of all. As a kindly old rebel with a point of view, I am inclined to run my mouth, to move the line much closer towards overt appreciation, if at all possible. Like I am about to do right now. So bear with me.
I must admit, when Chet came to me with the idea of selling local sponsorships to raise the funds for season plaques, I just thought it was another good idea which would require a lot of footwork- by someone. But anytime we can get a local sponsorship program off the ground, we solidify our local relationship at our race sites while offsetting plaque costs. So his was a great idea. Actually, Chet’s idea is a win/win/win because in the end, with each local sponsor, another season racer (seven races or more) gets a season plaque to hold their individual race results- for free!
Of course there was a catch. There always is with my little Kennewickian friend. Chet wanted me to write a letter, or maybe just to look over one that he had written to clean it up. I can’t recall now. 'Sure, no problem. Let’s do it.'
Well, shortly after this idea gets into first gear, and not long after it fell off of my short list of chores, I get a call from Chet. Did I get the letter done yet? He needs the letter. ‘Sure, no problem’ I tell him and back onto the short list it goes. Finally, after I sent the letter back, Chet calls again me this morning, less than a week later. He has already sold 19 plaque sponsorships. Nine-teen. One-niner. Can you believe it? Who IS this guy?!? I don’t know how many racers attended seven or more races last year, but I think that Chet already has most of them covered for next year.
Never underestimate the value of a great salesman, ladies and gentlemen. At the end of the day, they are what made America great. And great salesmen are born, not taught. Chet Lepinski lives in the Twilight Zone of great salesmen. He is a dead on, one man freak show of R/CU salesmanship! And I am here to give him his props: Bravo Chet Lepinski for yet another generous contribution of effort for the good of the club, the racers, and our sponsors.
Many people do good works as members of R/CU. Forgive me for highlighting just this one, when I see so many others too.
Thanks to all who contribute to make R/CU great.
