8/9/2008 - Roger - tenative Memorial
Some quick thoughts and information about the Czar. Roger Newton was simply one of the most beloved, talented, friendliest and helpful men I've ever know. His warm influence and the people he touched reached nearly every aspect of hydroplane racing. This Saturday, August 16th, many of these people will undoubtedly attend the special memorial for Roger at the Hydroplane and Raceboat museum. At this point, talking with son David, the family is not planning a traditional service. They feel a good old fashion WAKE is what Roger would want. This is still very tentative, but the event will likely be at 1pm. We'll tell some stories, share some laughs and tears about the Czar. I expect that the turnout will be huge. Roger had so many friends that we may have to hold the event outside. And that would be just fine with me. I think a loud burst from a 12 cylinder engine would be a fitting salute to the man who "Is" hydroplane racing to many of us. So check back here to confirm the date and time.

Only other thing I can add, while feeling so sad today, is that Rog did watch the Seafair Race on TV from his hospital room and was moved by the many get-well wishes he heard. And I'm certain that he died full or pride for his two wonderful children. David and Debbie are a tribute to Marty and Roger. Roger also died knowing that David had reached the top of R/C Unlimiteds leading the season high-point championship points. And to top it all off, David won the last R/CU race in Roger's life, the Columbia Cup, two weeks ago.

8/9/2008 - Roger Newton
From David Newton:
I regret to inform everyone that my father passed away this morning at 10:44. He developed may complications after his surgery due to the severity of the heart attack. He passed quietly and quickly without any pain or discomfort. In lieu of any flowers please send donations to the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum or Medic 1. I will get more detail on that later. Everyone can take comfort in knowing that he is up there now racing with my mother, Troy and all of the other fellow hydroplane brethren that has been taken from us. Thank you for everyone's support throughout the entire process for my dad. I know it meant the world to him to know before he passed that so many people loved and cared for him. It is my hopes to continue the plan business as I know how important it was for him to continue the growth and development of model hydroplane racing. For now Newton Marine is on hold, after the dust settles I will make announcements to fill the backlog of orders and info everyone of the future of its direction. God bless you dad you are now at peace.

8/9/2008 - Very Sad News
I regret to inform you that we have lost our great friend Roger from complications involving his recent heart attack.
Roger passed away this morning; he was on life support, having two artificial hearts and other devices keeping him going. The severity of it developed after he had triple bypass surgery this week. I am sure that when service details are known, David will make them know to us. Please pass this on to all of the RCU members.

8/8/2008 - Roger Newton Update
David Newton Says:
The doctors put in two bridges in my dad's heart today, and he is now on two artificial hearts in an attempt to get blood back to his organs and hopefully regain strength to his heart. The doctors want to keep this through the weekend and on Monday they will convene to talk about the possibility of a heart transplant. As they want to keep him like that this weekend, no news will be good news. He has the best doctors, nurses, and physicians working on him as we speak. He has the chief cardiologist working on him as well. All the facets are there and they are giving him the chance he needs to fight. Right now he will be taking absolutely no visitors, calls, etc. Thank you for all of your prayers.

8/8/2008 - Roger Newton Update
David Newton Says:
It has been one long night for my father and my family. To make it short, his heart is not pumping like it should to its organs and his kidneys began to shut down last night. They transported him to UW at 5 this morning in hopes to put an assitant something in his heart to cure this, not sure if it will or can be temp or permanent. If this fails he will need a heart transplant. He will hopefully get out of surgery at 1. Please keep my father in your thoughts and prayers, he needs them more then ever now. I am going to try and get some sleep, hopefully I will come back later with better news to share later on today.

8/8/2008 - Roger Newton Update
This is a call to all prayer warriors. Bill just talked to David @ 7:50 A.M. today. Roger is going in for more surgery, as his heart is not functioning on it's own and another procedure is being done as at UW Medical. David is saying that if this does not work, Roger would need a heart transplant. I am sorry to be the bearer of such dire news, but need everyone to be praying for Roger and of course for David, Debbie and all of the family. I would not suggest calling David for several hours as he is going to try to get some sleep from being up all night.

8/7/2008 - I'm Racin' For Roger This Weekend!
Fellow R/CU racers, friends, bitter rivals, one and all:
It just occurred to me that I have spent the entire week waiting for Czar updates as I prep the boat for Granger this weekend. Heck, the guy gets like nine mentions during the KIRO coverage of Seafair and the monthly Board of Directors meeting for the Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum was a sappy love-fest for an old dog that was fair game just last week. It has been "Roger Week" around my shop. Maybe it was at yours, too.

It would have been real easy to skip Granger, with all that needs to get done around here. But all that house work staring at me aint a bad reason for leavin' town, either. So I'm going "Racing for Roger" in Granger this weekend and I invite you all to join me! Everyone expects this to be a low census race and, sorta for Roger, I'd like to blow his mind with ann epic turn out. You and I both know that when he is able to raise those feeble old arms again, the second thing he is going to do is to check out this website to see who won the Silver Cup. I'd love to blow Rogers mind with a big field of entries. I'm pretty pumped about that idea, actually.

I am going to take a group photo at Granger for a get well card, so you have to be there. (Who knows, mooning could be involved) And if we can get a whole lot of us to come and Race For Roger, we will all have a great time that we can all rub in his face at the Gold Cup!

I know this is late notice, but if you were teetering, be decisive and come to Granger. If you flat weren't gonna go, take a second to rethink your decision and load the car. If you are "retired" get off your sorry butt and get down to Granger (and bring Harry with you!). If you are R/CU alums who loved racing against the Czar but only drop by the website from time to time, go charge those nicads, grab a roadmap and get to Granger! Free hot dogs, soft drinks, dinosaurs made of concrete! We are going to have a great time!

There is going to be a special Roger J. Newton story tell-off on Saturday night, so shine 'em up! Amazing prizes! I'll see you in Granger because this weekend.... I'm Racin' For Roger!

Marc

8/7/2008 - Roger Newton Update
Thursday Update:
David says Dad is doing well, but under heavy medication for the operation he had last night. The nurses were concerned however with the outpour of visitors and phone calls that they have had from all of his friends. I know my father and my family greatly appreciate your support but for now he is not allowed to have any visitation or phone calls for at least a few days. I will post immediately when this changes. But like the nurse said, every phone call she receives is more time away from helping Roger and his healing process. Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers, I will continue to update everyone as his recovery continues.

8/7/2008 - Newton Family Update
Dear Boating Community,

Thank you for all of the well wishes, prayer and support for my father and my family. I know this has meant the world to him and kept his spirits high throughout the entire ordeal.

His surgery was a success yesterday, which means today we need to begin the process for healing from the surgery as well as a healthy future. He will have to limit himself in a way in which we both are not looking forward to, and unfortunately I believe we will have to bow out of hydroplane racing for the rest of the year. I know that for my father and myself this is a tough decision, but it is necessary to ensure more boat races to come for us both.

It goes without question that each and everyone of you would do anything for us at the races to help us, but I believe your support for a healthy recovery and limiting my dad without him pushing himself to race or even run a boat is the best outlook for a recovery. I hope you all share this notion with my family as it is a great concern of ours. We don't want him to overexert himself and create further problems down the road. We look forward to racing again in 2009 and many more boat races to come!

Thank you for the generous support,

David Newton

8/6/2008 - Roger Newton Update
Roger got out of surgery at 6:30 P.M. and all went as planned. He was transported to his room for recovery from his surgery. There were no complications and it looks as though it was a success. He got the by-pass, defibrilator-pacemaker all at once.

8/6/2008 - Boat Bio Updates
The following boat bio's have been updated; 1981 Captran Resorts, 1970 Miss Budweiser II, 1982 Gilmore Special, 1979 Squire Shop and the 1965 Miss Lapeer.

8/6/2008 - Roger Newton Update
While David Newton was in the waiting room, he sent this:
Just in the waiting room at Overlake Hospital now and wanted to give another update on Roger. He went in to surgery at 1:20 P.M today and is not expected to be out of the surgery until after 7:30 P.M. or so.
We are told he won't be able to have visitors outside of immediate family for at least a few days as his immune system will be shut down. As a result, Roger won't be allowed to have visitors that are sick. Spirits were high before surgery, as he has made some recovery since his heat attack, now we just wait until he is in recovery.

8/6/2008 - Roger Newton Update
Bill Smiley just visited the Czar at Overlake; he is looking quite well. The nurse just shaved his beard and he's looking sharp for surgery Wednesday morning. We shared a few laughs and he's in good spirits. Bill's wife worked at Overlake and is familiar with the surgeon and she said Roger has an excellent doctor, so he's in good hands.

8/5/2008 - Roger Newton Update
Tuesday Update:
Well my dad was just transported to Overlake Hospital in Bellevue. He had another good night last night with no episodes, they are hoping to do all surgerys tomorrow and get them over with as he is getting stronger and showing improvement. I am not certain when the surgery will be but I will let everyone know when I find out.

8/5/2008 - Roger Newton Update
Monday Update:
Today was a good day for Roger. The doctors said his heart is getting stronger and they are thinking about transpoting him to Overlake tomorrow and deciding on whether to bump up his surgery from Friday or not. He will still need a permenant pace maker and defib in his chest, but doctors are now thinking about that after his surgery. From talking to my dad today his voice sounds much stronger, and the best it has sounded since he was admited a week ago from today. Things are looking better before surgery, lets just hope they continue this way throughout the surgery and beyond.

8/5/2008 - A Roger Newton Get Well Message

With some help from Brian Anderson, the Lepinski's send a shout out to Roger Newton to get well soon at a Seattle Mariner's game.

8/4/2008 - Roger Newton Update
Just wanted to update on my dad for everyone. He had a rough night last night as he had more episodes around 3:30 A.M. or so of the V-fib (not sure if that is the correct way of saying it). His heart rate shot up to 220 until doctors were able to stablize him. They put an emergency pace maker in early this morning and he is stable now, but very tired. He is on more medication to keep his heart rate at a stable level, but his heart is too weak now to get the ICD put in tomorrow, a defib pacemaker combo from what I know. He needs to rest today and hopefully he can get that put in soon, then they can worry about the quad bypass later in the week.

8/3/2008 - Roger Newton Update
David last night he said Roger looked much better. He sat up a lot yesterday and ate all of his dinner. All of this sounds very positive. David said he would be sending out information and we'll keep you posted on any progress that we hear.

8/1/2008 - Roger Newton Update
David said this evening that Roger was back in ICU at the hospital. All I know is that his heart was beating rapidly and it was necessary to take measures to correct it. I am surmising somewhat that they may opt to do something before the time frame originally planned. Visitors will be limited to family members again.

7/30/2008 - Roger Newton Update
Roger is out of critical care from his recent heart attack. He was up a bit today and David says that the plan is for him to have bypass surgery a week from this Friday. He will be moved to Overlake Hospital from Valley General for the operation. He's now in room 3705 at Valley.

David Newton says: I just got home from the hospital and wanted to update everyone on my fathers condition. He was moved from ICU to a normal hospital room today, so he is now accepting vistors but still not up for phone calls. The doctors want to let his heart rest and recover before a surgery, so we are looking to have the surgery in a week from Friday which he will be transfered to Overlake hopspital for. As he has one artery completly blocked, one partially and two branches blocked it will be a quadrulple bypass. I will keep everyone informed as it goes along, but right now he just has to rest until surgery time. He is coherent, talkative and worried about the boats lol, so his spirits are up. Sorry if I have not gotten back to anyone via email or phone, I have had many calls, it is kind of hard to keep track of, but I will try my best to keep everyone informed.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. It means alot to myself, my family and my father to know that we have so many friends in and out of racing. I think my father and I are truly blessed with the community of people that we have met and made friends with because of hydroplane racing.

7/29/2008 - Roger Newton Update
Roger is at Valley General Hospital in Kent, WA. He is not seeing visitors except family and not taking phone calls. They tried to correct his issue with a "stint" (a spring that expands the blood vessel to let more blood through), that however proved unsuccessful. So they will have him rest for a few days to recover from that procedure and then most likely do a bypass.
More information will be posted here once it becomes available.

7/29/2008 - Roger Newton in Hospital
The details are a bit sketchy at this time, but it appears that Roger suffered a heart attack before, or over, this past weekend. Roger crewed for the Navy hydroplane over in Tri-Cities for the Columbia Cup event over the weekend and reportedly felt as though he had suffered some degree of heat stroke at the races. But conditions worsened and further examination showed the heart related problems. David Newton has posted on the International Waters forum indicating that he is in a local Intensive Care Unit receiving treatment and is in stable condition. As information on Rogers condition is made available, it will be posted here. In the mean time, please join us in keeping our Czar and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

4/29/2008 - Jackie Lepinski
When someone we love passes away, we ache, but we go on. Our dear departed would want us to heal, after they are gone. Grief is a normal way to mend. The anguish and pain in our hearts; we need time to remember and time to mourn, before the recovery starts. Let's draw together to recuperate, as we go through this period of sorrow; let's help each other, with tender care to find a brighter tomorrow.

Jackie Kay Lepinski went to be with her Lord on Monday, April 28, at Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, Washington. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends.

She was born in Richland WA on November 4, 1969, to Chester and Sandy Lepinski.

Jackie worked for Lockheed Martin for twenty years. She started in 1987 as a high school student and ended up in the Human Resource Department as a HR Specialist.

Jackie enjoyed many things in life. She grew up doing competitive roller skating until she was 12. She became very involved in the Tri-City Americans hockey team. She even went on a long road trip to Canada one time to support the team. Her latest enjoyment was cruising. She had been to Alaska, Hawaii, Caribbean, Panama Canal, and Mexico. Her next adventure was to go to Fiji. While cruising she had a chance to swim with the dolphins and go white water rafting.

She is survived by her parents Chester and Sandra (Richland), brother Brian (Richland), and sister Brenda (Everett). She is also survived by her many friends.

The family would like to extend our gratitude to the dedicated and caring professionals in the Intensive Care Unit at Kadlec Medical Center. These were the most incredible set of nurses. Each one of her nurses took very special care of her (Keith, Randy, Lisa, Kara, Gene, and Joy). Thank you for making her last days as peaceful as could be.

There will be a celebration of her life on Friday, May 2nd, at the Central Church; 1124 Stevens Dr.; Richland, WA. From 3:00 to 5:00 pm.

The family has requested that instead of sending flowers please make a donation to the American Lung Association or the Kadlec Medical Foundation for further research on Acute Interstitial Pneumonia.

There will be a memorial page at www.einansfuneralhome.com.

Harry had a successful surgery to replace his hip-ball-joint. He's probably real sore but resting tonight. The surgery lasted about 2 ½ hours to install the nice new titanium ball replacement. He was in recovery for a few hours and was taken to a room on the 7th floor but I'm not sure which one. (they didn't have an empty room until tonight.)

I'm sure by morning they will have got him up walking as they don't waste any time on hip replacements when it comes to rehab. So at this point I'm guessing he'll be in the hospital till Monday or Tuesday. He'll then either go to a rehab/nursing facility or maybe even come here to our house like he did after his leg amputation (but I know he hates my cooking when I force too many vegetable on him).

I'm sure by tomorrow afternoon he'll have slept and be happy to hear from any of you.

3/20/2008 - Harry in the Hospital
If you could wish Harry well, or send him a prayer I'm sure he would appreciate it. The following is info on Harry's condition from Don Mock.

Harry took a spill on a slippery driveway last night and fell on his left side and fractured his hip. It's the ball end of the leg bone that is cracked and they are planning surgery today to replace the ball part of the hip socket. He's at Virginia Mason. I just got back from seeing him and he's understandably [upset] and in lots of pain but still in pretty good spirits. He's still in the ER and will likely head straight to surgery from there, then to a room tonight.

It's possible, however, that they might wait a few days to operate because he has a sore on his big toe on that leg which they need to be sure is not infected. If so, he'll get a few days of antibiotics before the surgery.

I'll report on the success of the surgery later. It's a pretty routine surgery but it will most likely be a tough rehab for Harry so wish him well. I told him we'll all drag him to the first race no matter what shape he was in.

3/13/2008 - Racing Plaques and Racing News from Chet
Seeing it is only 1 month away from our first race, Chet needs to know what to do about the trophies for this year. At the last board meeting we decided to stay with the little plates like the last two years. Chet had 11 plaques left over from last year. To get the new headings for this year on them it would cost the same as selling 3 sponsorships. We will need to get 14 sponsorships more to make a total of 25 for the first racers that make 7 races and get them free. So a total of 17 sponsorships to cover our cost.

Well on Monday morning dear Chet put on his selling face and went out and by noon had sold a total of 14 sponsorships. He has to sell 3 more but see's no problem in getting this done. He has 3 people that are to get back to him. Brian and Chet did the new plate for this year and went to the trophy shop this afternoon and got them ordered plus the little plates for the first two races.

A photo of our 2008 plaques is listed at the top of the 'Home' page.

News from Chet:
"Now to the Bud. This last Sunday, Brian layer up a new set of wings because we need one new left upright. I know that this will make Marc, Lee and Roger happy. We will be laying up a complete new set of wings that will be put on later in the season. On Monday I found a place that said they could do my graphics for the boat and have them to me by the end of the week. Also Jack Carson told me about another place back in the midwest. I talked to them but he had nothing in stock for the Bubble Bud but could get me them in the mail by the end of the week. So I think I will place an order for them. Well the crew chef was out in the shop bright an early. Put the servo in the rear radio box. Did some miner things to the cowling. Put on the stacks and painted them. Will mount in cowing after it gets painted. Then the fun part. He masked off the cowling that had to be painted red. I was surprised the great job he did in such a little time. He then painted the red. Well that is another day closer to getting this boat in the water. Just maybe be read for the first race."

3/11/2008 - Racing Plaques
Again this year the club will be giving a big plaque to the drivers that go to seven races. These are the ones that you can put your little plates that you get at the race and they will be free. Otherwise, if you attend less than seven races and would like to purchase a plaque to place your race plates on, contact Chet Lepinski. The cost of the plaques are $25.00 For those who would like, Chet will have the place take off the "2008" on the plaque. That way you can use it for last years and this years.

2/16/2008 - Roger's Lake Havasu weekend
In Roger Newton's never ending quest to find sunshine and warmth he drove to Lake Havasu last weekend to run his Gas powered Miss Bardahl. Roger said the results weren't as good as if David had been there driving.
Roger went on to explain: "I told everyone that I was just there for the sunshine. And that they didnt have to worry because I left David home to attend school and work. They all breathed a big sigh of relief. It was a fun race. Over 250 gas boats were entered in about 10 classes. We had over 20 boats in the Classic Thunderboat class. Didnt do too well in the prelims. Did make it into the final which was run under the lights. Talk about scary You lose depth perception at night. Plus they could have used more lights. Anyway ended up in 4th place. Next up is Tucson at the end of March. Stay tuned for further developments!!"

David and Roger just returned from the 27th Annual NAMBA Winternats that were held in Orlando, Florida. About 325 boats in 20 classes were entered in the race. The Newton's took down 3 boats. David's 7-11, a Classic Thunderboat, 1968 Miss Bardahl, and a new GX-1 Sport boat. Roger reports that the weather was a lot better than here. Imagine that! David drove all three boats and won with the 7-11 and Bardahl. He even won best of show with the Bardahl. One of the nicest points was that they got to see a lot of old friends and make some new ones. They are looking forward to doing it again next year, and think you should attend as well!
