10/30/2010 - Newsletter Request
Hello all, it has been a wild couple of months with school, sports, and the normal craziness of a teenage life. Because of this, I haven't had any time to organize another issue of the R/CU newsletter, and I apologize for this. However, I plan on creating our end-of-the-year newsletter soon, so I need your help. Any thoughts, photos, reflections, stories, anecdotes, or articles on the previous season of boat racing (be it R/C, Unlimited, or Vintage) is needed in order to create a strong newsletter. Also, as noted in the previous newsletter, I want to start publishing stories on why all of you decided to race a certain boat. There are hundreds of hydroplanes out there to choose from, yet you all chose to race a certain ONE. Why? Or, maybe you have a story on a dream hydroplane that you would want to race in future. I'll take anything, just send it the email link above right, and we'll do our best to make the best newsletter possible.

8/19/2010 - Rule Update
Penalty Regarding Unsportsmanlike Conduct

When a claim of unsportsmanlike conduct is deemed appropriate by any club member, that member may present a complaint to the Contest Director, (Driver's Rep if the complaint involves the CD). The CD will then gather 2 board members to discuss the complaint. If action is deemed warranted by that group a verbal warning will be made to the party/parties accused. If another warning is required during the course of the event the party/parties will be disqualified from participating as a driver for the remainder of the event. Driver points earned to that point will remain.

A complaint and resolution should be made before the next flight is completed. Example, a complaint is made right after heat 2C. Resolution should be completed prior to the start of heat 3C.

On Saturday they are having a Farmers Market on the upper level across from us. They have put in new stair leveling on that side so that you can now sit on level grass. 6/08/2010 - Rules Change
June 7, 2010

A Board meeting was called after the race in Ellensburg.

A motion was made to standardize race formats in the future utilizing one of the 2 following formats. Contest Directors can choose from one of the two following.

  1. 4 sections of 5 lap heats followed by consolation heats and final. The second consolation heat winner moves to the first consolation race and the winner of the first consolation moves to the "Trailer" position in the final. In this format the top six point boats are in the final with the winner of the first consolation added as "Trailer".

  2. 4 sections of 5 lap heats followed by consolation heats and final. The second consolation heat winner moves to the "Trailer" position in the final race. The winner of the first consolation moves to the final. In this format the top five point boats are in the final with the winners of the first and second consolation races being added as stated above.

The Board concurred that if a time constraint to finish a race comes in to play that common sense would dictate to reduce to 3 lap heats.

The motion was seconded and passed.

A motion was made to state "if a boat hits a buoy it shall not be a penalty. A boat must clearly miss a buoy by going inside the buoy to be called a one lap penalty." The motion was seconded. Discussion ensued explaining the purpose of the change was to simplify an ongoing difficulty of determining whether or not a boat was more than 50% over a buoy. The motion passed.

The meeting adjourned.

4/8/2010 - Better Fuel Pricing
Hello Racers,

I have been receiving calls from some of you regarding fuel needs.

I have already done my normal order and haven't been able to meet additional need.

In an effort to assist with your needs I am trying to put together another fuel buy. However, my normal supplier, Redmax fuel price increase is pushing the cost of delivered fuel over the 41.00 mark.

I have made arrangements with another supplier, Maxey's Fuel, to meet our needs at a little better pricing. If I can order more than 32 gallons at this time I can supply to you at $33.00 per gallon delivered at a race site. This will be 55% fuel.

Please act quickly if interested. I may not have for Tri Cities but should for the first Eburg race. If interested I need response to rrc2@charter.net and immediate payment by your check or paypal. Paypal addy is same as listed. Please list the number of gallons requested in your email.

I want to place this order no later than April 18 to have for Eburg so the 17th is the closing date for now.

Thanks,
Bill Brandt

3/23/2010 - Hydro at Atomic Cup
At this year's Atomic Cup we will have an unlimited hydroplane on site all day Saturday, April 17. Thanks to Greg and Brian O'Farrell, the Water Follies now has a display hydro to promote the July race in the Tri-Cities. The plans are to display the boat at different locations for the next four months. The Water Follies will be putting new decals on the side of the hydroplane to make it more of a local hydro. Seeing that R/CU is a part of the events of the Water Follies, they will be displaying the hydro at our first race. Thank you Kathy for letting this happen. This hull is the original Pay n Pak turbine.

3/15/2010 - UPDATE* Curt Anderson Service
Mueller's will not be providing the service. The service will be put on by the family at the Mausoleum in the Desert Lawn Memorial Park. The location is at the same address on Union but will be in the cemetery instead.

3/13/2010 - Curt Anderson Service
Curt Anderson will be laid to rest on Thursday March 18th. The service will be at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S.Union in Kennewick. This is the same location were Troy's service was. The service is at 3:00P.M. After the service there will be a get together at Kimo's on 2696 N. Columbia Center Blvd in Richland that will be put on by Curt's boss.

3/10/2010 - Curt Anderson
I guess we were all pretty shocked to hear about the loss of Curt Anderson yesterday. You could look around the R/CU pits at any given race and, well, Curt might have seemed to rank among the most likely to remain upright. I, for one, expected to rub decks with Curt for many more races to come. So I, like you, am deeply saddened to learn this morning that I have lost another good friend and racing buddy.

I say now, as we so often do, that I regret that I did not know Curt better off the race course. He and Greg made every effort, but I was always anxious to head home after a Tri-Cities race. Still, this does not diminish my R/CU experiences with Curt one bit- they were all great. Some were even epic. As a perennial middle of the packer', I might, on the occasional race, elevate to the level where I gave Curt and/or Greg a few problems out on the race course. And often on these occasions, I would be racing against Curt, or calling for somebody racing against him. You get the picture- we were in a lot of close races against either each other, or with the racer we were each calling for. Since a lot of those ended up being drag races to the finish line, we shared a lot of laughs and a lot of post-race jabs on the driver's stand. It was always good fun and always good natured with Curt and I, like many, really appreciated that aspect of his personality. He raced hard, but if it didn't work out, he was still going to make it a fun time. He was still going to laugh about it. It was the same whether he struggled, or he won the race.

I only raced with Curt for seven or eight seasons. (I forget now!) But many in R/CU have raced with him for over two decades. Curt, I learn now, was one of our 'old timers' in R/CU. And when we lose one of the old timers, we really feel it at the beach.

I could pretty much count on seeing Curt at Two Rivers Park for the first race of the season. Heck, I think he may have lived in the neighborhood. As I have been working to get my boat ready for the Kennewick trip, my fond memories of racing there flood back and fuel the anticipation for the next season opener, a little over a month away. I was looking forward to tangling with Curt and Greg with great relish. Today, those high hopes and giddy preseason expectations are all put to the side as my thoughts turn to Curt, the person, and what I learned from knowing him. I have a lot to think about.

One small detail of Curt's life- one which perhaps does not matter to anyone else but me- will remain a profound mystery, now lost forever with his passing. How in the world did he ever get one (or maybe 2) K motors to last for several years? Incredible! Unbelievable!

Via con Dios, Curt. You will be missed by all of us.

Marc Connelly

If you would like to leave your feelings like Marc has done here, a Memorial page has been created for that.

2/02/2010 - Just a few tears
...from mama because Zoey can't come home after all :c I just talked to the neonatologist and he said the nurses noticed a change in Zoey. Decreased activity and her saturations were going down when she was in an upright position. They'll be running some tests to make sure there's no infections and will give her the vaccination to help protect her against RSV. I know my little punkin will come home when the timing is right ... but I am truly sad. I guess I now realize just how happy and excited I was (not so nervous) to have her come home! Keep praying strength for her and us all. For all future updates click here.

1/23/2010 - New APBA RC Chairman
Mark Weber - President of APBA, recently informed RCU's very own Brian Lepinski that he has been appointed APBA RC Chairman.

After receiving the position, Brian stated "My Goal is to strengthen the membership of APBA Here in the northwest and the rest of the United States and Canada. Another of My goals is to bring the APBA nationals to the Northwest in 2011. I would also like to thank outgoing Chairman Dick Caspari For all the work He has done for APBA."

Congratulations Brian! We all know that you will serve the APBA well for all of those involved in RC Boating.

1/7/2010 - Glow Plug Buy
Brian Lepinski is putting together a glow plug order for O'Donnel Blue plugs. The plugs will be priced at $3.59 per plug if we order up to 500 plugs. If the order gets up to 1000 plugs or more, the price will be $3.29 per plug.

These O'Donnell blue plugs are the same ones that the Brandt's were running last season and in Brian's opinion hold up better than MC-9 plugs. Please and let him know the quantity you would like ASAP. Brian will let everyone know the price on February 15th. Money will be due on February 31st. Plug delivery will be at the race sites, or he will ship it to you if you want to pay postage.
