Terry Olding's Memorial page
R/C Unlimiteds extends it's thoughts and prayers to friends and family of Terry Olding.

We are sad to report that Terry Olding passed away today April 9th, 2006, after a battle with throat cancer.

For anyone who had the privilege of meeting Terry, your life has been touched by a very kind and competitive individual who would help you out in a heartbeat.

"Terry was a great RCU racer through the 1980's to mid '90's and was one of the guys to beat when I started racing. He was a great person one which I admired and respected a lot. We were setting up, as trivial as it seems now, to get Terry a ride in one of the museum boats next month. And a person we can extend our help and friendship to is Terry's long time racing partner and nephew, Ron Davis. This will be tough on him. - Don Mock"

"Hello Hydro friends, Sad news today, our great old friend, Terry Olding passed away this Sunday afternoon. TO, as we called him for over 20 years was involved in both RCU & UNW scale unlimited model race clubs. He won High Point Championships in both clubs, I believe. A wonderful person who deserved much better. And he was only 53 ! Back in 1984 the real unlimited Tosti Asti hit the circuit. It went up for draw in both RCU & UNW. Terry O and myself along with many others put in for the draw, and Terry won it in both clubs. He kept the registration in both clubs and never changed to other boats. TO, loved that Tosti Asti. What more can I say, Terry was terrific guy with many friends who will miss him. When we all go to Tri Cities and Seattle for the big unlimited races, Terry will be with us. - John Logan"

"Hi All Yes this is very sad news!!.......... L. Terry will be with all of us forever!! For he touched us all and lives on in our thoughts and memories!! When you all go barreling into the next races first corner and miraculously come around without cutting that buoy, you thought for sure you'd clip, just know that Terry is looking after and over us all!! Heaven has gained a helluva racer!! And an Awesome person. Terry!! See you at the "Rainbow Bridge". J. Be assured T.O., you are sorely missed by us all!! Please help with our feelings of sorrow and loss, because a part of "Us" has gone along with you Terry. - Your Seattle Friend Tom English"

"Hello Everyone, Although I have not been fortunate enough to share the history of hydroplane racing in the Pacific Northwest like the rest of you, I did have a chance to know Terry from my trips to Tri-Cities and the Northwest Scale Hydroplane Championships. John Logan introduced me to Terry as the "guy I gotta meet" a number of years ago. From that day forward, Terry always treated me like a long time friend. I will remember Terry as the guy with the beautiful Tosti Asti who won Scale Unlimited Concourse at Marty Shallenberger's inaugural Northwest Scale Hydroplane Championship Race. And especially when he dawned the Tosti Asti race team crew shirt at Tri-Cities Fun Group event when we all gathered around the hotel pool for the annual team crew shirt photo shoot with the Oberto race team. Those are memories that will stay with me forever. - Al Waters NAMBA President"

"I was extremely saddened by the news last Saturday that Terry was so desperately ill. He was emailing me a month ago looking for raceboat parts. The news of his passing on Sunday was very upsetting and I feel his loss acutely. I shall miss him a lot. He was a fella who was just plain fun to be around. He was a lovely man and a gifted racer. Quiet, friendly, unassuming and possessed of a gentle spirit on the beach but a real hard-nosed competitor on the water. Anybody trying to budge him out of his lane was scheduled for a boat wreck. I once asked him why he didn't avoid the collision if he could, he said that there were lots more races to run and that particular guy wouldn't try that again! He also had a great ability to laugh at himself-I'm thinking in particular when he fell in the lake at Marysville a couple of years ago. I had gotten him a towel I carry and he was making Blub-Blub type jokes about being Aquaman (while he pantomimed swimming). After Terry had his voicebox removed I visited him at Virginia Mason a couple of times and gave him a Bible to read. We had several email conversations about faith and salvation and as a result I have no doubt that our beloved TO is enjoying a new , healthy body and is at total peace. - Mike Cathey"
